Application Modernization andMainframe Migration

Maintaining and supporting legacy systems to match user needs is a challenge to most CIOs today. While functionality matures over time and testing, technology often lags behind. Seemingly simple tasks like sharing data online between different offices or allowing suppliers to view orders to maintain inventory can be daunting.

SAINCE is a member of Microsoft’s Mainframe Migration Alliance and IBM’s Mainframe Migration group and in association with its partner company Softsell, SAINCE provides modernization solutions for transforming legacy systems into component-based architectures. SAINCE offers solutions to leverage your investments of current applications into the world of Windows and the Internet.

SAINCE provides cost effective solutions with in-house tools, techniques and processes to provide smooth transition of your application into N-tier business objects. Softsell has technology for this re-engineering and will meet customer specifications in terms of time, quality and cost.

Despite the demands on technology, legacy systems often house unique business processes, refined over decades to provide specialization and competitive edge with historical data. Driving the need for change is the inherent costs in maintaining and operating such a system without a fear of obsolescence.

Our solution highlights include:

Scalable Architecture

The monolithic architecture used in legacy applications restricts growth and inhibits inter-operability. Often, applications have user display codes interspersed with vital business functionality, which interact with data files to retrieve and update information.

Legacy application programmers are often forced to copy and paste codes to achieve 're-use', because of this. As applications age, complexities increase and continued changes to the system consume more effort and time.

Integration Capabilities

Most legacy applications, initially were hard-wired for a specific functionality on a specific system. This made integration with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tools or with Internet-based exchanges tortuous, sometimes downright impossible.

However, integration demands made on enterprise applications have anything but decreased. Applications that cannot integrate are often forced to use delayed data, where data synchronization may happen at night. This has made organizations adopt 'innovative' integration techniques with multiple tools and complex layers.

Maintenance

Legacy applications, when initially written, were custom-made to suit the operating systems/ compilers that they were built for. For example, most Assembler programs have limited expression options when compared to other modern languages, as memory usage was expensive when these were written. Therefore the expressions and coding styles adopted then, needed to reflect such constraints.

These special coding techniques are irrelevant today. But these make systems more complicated to maintain, more so when the application documentation does not keep pace with the development/ maintenance.

Legacy system development skills also require more efforts to find and retain. Industry polls show that over 75 % of an IT budget may be allocated to operation and maintenance of legacy systems.

User Interfaces

There is enormous hype around graphical user interfaces today. However it is important to see beyond this hype, to the real world benefits that easy-to-use interfaces bring to an organization.

Validation for the maximum length allowed for a text and checks to see if valid values were entered in a field, means that legacy applications had large amounts of code dedicated to such validations. Reduced screen space and low resolution resulted in a higher number of screens.

Vendor Support

As new trends emerge and innovative technologies take precedence, hardware costs reduce while efficiencies increase. This spurs organizations to adopt new vendors, upsetting existing business relationships.

Mergers and acquisitions amongst IT vendors may change the strategy for support to legacy systems. Dynamic market conditions affect directions that IT hardware vendors adopt. This forces organizations to re-look at their systems, constantly evaluating support and strategies that their vendors provide.

Overview

Legacy modernization is crucial to companies that need to optimize business value from functionally rich legacy applications. Component-based, distributed applications allow businesses to encapsulate and simplify functionality or even utilize them from other service providers with web services.

LeMiT is a new-generation modernization technology for legacy sources (COBOL, PowerBuilder, Assembler, IBM RPG, FORTRAN and PICK systems) to be transformed to the object world of JAVA (J2EE) and Microsoft Visual Basic.Net.

Look Ahead Solutions

Our proprietary tool blends your legacy programs with components to give you features not available in legacy applications, but provided as standard features in the converted programs. This brings the best of GUI to users with features, as they require, even if it were not part of your current applications. Tomorrow's techniques are etched onto your applications today, to give you the latest in Windows programming and easy-to-use interfaces.

Scalable N-tiered Architecture

Sequential flow-based legacy models are re-architected into an N-tiered event driven model. Our tool identifies and distributes the functionality of a legacy application into a presentation, business and database service. This n-tiered model yields a sound business and technical solution, which can be maintained with emerging technologies.

JAVA/ VB.Net Compliant Sources

Our tool generates codes and objects that compile cleanly with JAVA/ Visual Basic.Net. This generation guarantees you that sources are complete with latest features and provide you with a framework that you can depend and build on.

Database Schema Conversion

Our tool also provides a Modeler that offers database schema conversion. The original database can be tailored to change existing fields with provision to add table/field/index definitions. The application can now be connected to multiple databases, even if it originally did not. LeMiT offers solutions to migrate to DB/2, ORACLE or SQL Server.

Office Products Integration

Our tool is built to support Office and integrates easily with Office products. This new product integrates with Microsoft-OUTLOOK to support sending mail without closing your applications. It has pre-defined components to make this seamless with the modernized application.

Demand Faxing

Our tool also provides a facility to FAX all your documents, when configured, to your trading partners, without closing your current applications. All your partners share your data, through your fax, as and when your applications need to send them.

Quality Processes

Our tool is built using object oriented methods starting from requirements to delivery using our internal KINETIC model. Every stage is carefully conceived to give you a product that surpasses your needs. This uncompromising attitude has now matured into our internal processes, to give you a technology not available in legacy systems.

Migration Support Conversion

SAINCE has a proven business model to migrate your applications and sources effectively through various proven stages. A project manager is assigned to you and promptly takes you and your team through the various deliverables at all stages to ensure that extra edge in service.
